Homeowners often notice new fire ant mounds appearing in the lawn within a few days of a major rain event — these are not new colonies establishing, but existing colonies that have moved to drier ground on the property. New mound activity should be treated within a few days of appearing; mounds that are more than a week old become harder to eliminate with mound drench treatments and may require broadcast bait.
Ghost ants forage indoors more aggressively during rainy periods as moisture changes affect their outdoor food sources. Carpenter ant activity is elevated around moisture-damaged wood — rain events that wet wood framing, fascia, or soffits accelerate the conditions that attract carpenter ants as nesting sites. Active moisture issues found during or after rainy season should be repaired promptly.
