Squirrels in Miami Attics — Why It's Urgent
Squirrel gnawing on electrical wiring in an attic is a documented cause of residential fires. Unlike raccoons — whose primary damage is contamination and insulation destruction — squirrels' incessant gnawing behavior means that wiring damage is almost guaranteed in any established squirrel attic infestation. Electrical cables with chewed insulation may arc and ignite attic insulation.
Both Eastern gray squirrels and Southern flying squirrels are common in Miami-Dade attics. Gray squirrels are diurnal (active during the day), so homeowners hear movement in the morning and afternoon. Flying squirrels are nocturnal — activity at night is often mistaken for rats. Flying squirrel infestations can involve significantly larger groups and are more common in Miami's older tree-canopy neighborhoods.
Warning Signs of Squirrels in the Attic
- Scratching, running, or rolling sounds in the attic (daytime = gray squirrels; nighttime = flying squirrels)
- Chewed holes at roofline, soffit, or gable vents
- Gnawed wood at entry points with fresh chew marks
- Squirrels seen repeatedly entering and exiting the roofline
- Nesting debris (leaves, insulation) visible in attic
- Urine staining on ceiling or attic joists
Our Squirrel Removal Method
Full exterior inspection to map all entry points and internal attic assessment to evaluate squirrel population size, nesting locations, and any wiring or structural damage.
One-way door devices are installed at the primary entry point, allowing squirrels to exit but not re-enter. Supplemental live trapping is used for remaining individuals. This method prevents squirrels from dying inaccessibly inside wall or attic cavities.
After confirmed removal, every gap and potential entry point is permanently sealed with galvanized hardware cloth, metal flashing, and sealant — squirrel-proof materials that chewing cannot defeat.
We inspect and document attic wiring, insulation, HVAC ducts, and structural wood for gnaw damage. If wiring damage is identified, we recommend immediate electrician follow-up before any live wires are left in an unknowing state.
