Why they're hard to eliminate: Ghost ant colonies have multiple queens and practice "budding" — when disturbed (by spray), the colony splits and queens relocate with workers to new sites, spreading the infestation. Repellent sprays from hardware stores make this dramatically worse.
Treatment: Slow-acting gel bait that workers carry to all queens. Applied to foraging trails and entry points. Never spray ghost ant trails — this triggers budding.
Appearance: Reddish-brown, 1.6–5mm. Visible dome-shaped mounds in soil, grass, and landscaping. Extremely aggressive when disturbed.
Where found: Lawn mounds, garden beds, under pavers, beside driveways and sidewalks. Less common indoors except along the perimeter during rainy season when mounds flood.
Why they're dangerous: Fire ant stings inject alkaloid venom (solenopsin) causing intense burning pain, raised white pustules, and in people with allergies, potentially fatal anaphylaxis. Children and pets stepping on hidden mounds are at highest risk in Miami yards.
Treatment: Two-step — broadcast fire ant bait granules over the full yard for colony elimination, followed by individual mound drench for immediate knockdown of active mounds. Retreatment every 3–6 months for ongoing protection.
Appearance: Florida's largest ant — 6–13mm, black or black-and-red. Often seen individually foraging at night, which distinguishes them from other species.
Where found: Moist or water-damaged wood in walls, roof eaves, window frames, and attic framing. Typically indicate an underlying moisture problem — leaky roof, plumbing leak, AC condensation, or poor drainage.
Why they're a concern: Carpenter ants excavate galleries in wood to nest. While they don't eat wood like termites, sustained gallery expansion causes real structural damage — and finding carpenter ants usually means finding the moisture source that attracted them is critical.
Treatment: Targeted residual insecticide applied to nesting sites and foraging pathways. Carpenter ant treatment must be combined with moisture source correction for lasting results.
Appearance: Two distinct worker sizes — minor workers (2mm) and major "soldier" workers (3.5–4mm) with disproportionately large heads. Light reddish-brown coloring.
Where found: Loose soil around paver edges, landscaping borders, under potted plants, lawn areas. One of Miami's most prevalent yard ant species. Identifies itself by the characteristic loose, sandy soil "heaping" around nest entrances.
Why they're a nuisance: Bigheaded ant colonies are enormous — multiple queens, millions of workers, and interconnected underground gallery networks that span entire properties. They displace other soil fauna and can undermine paver installations. Entry into homes through expansion joints and pipe penetrations becomes common as colonies grow.
Treatment: Broadcast granular baits applied to the yard combined with perimeter residual treatment. Multiple applications typically needed for full colony elimination given colony size.
Appearance: Small (2.5–3mm), dark brown-black body with pale yellowish-white feet. Often seen in large trailing columns on exterior walls, trees, and utility lines leading into the home.
Where found: Massive exterior colonies in tree hollows, under bark, in wall voids, and along utility lines. One of the most difficult ant species to control in South Florida — colonies can contain 1–3 million workers.
Why they're challenging: Up to half the colony population is reproductive females — meaning massive queen numbers that can re-establish quickly. They do not respond well to most over-the-counter baits and require specific professional products. Their large trailing columns along tree limbs and roof lines are a characteristic diagnostic sign.
Treatment: Combination of targeted baiting with products proven effective against white-footed ants plus residual perimeter treatment. Tree limbs touching the structure must be trimmed to cut off access routes.
Repellent sprays — the kind sold at hardware stores and grocery stores — are the wrong tool for Miami's most common ant species. Here's why:
Ghost ants have multiple queens. Repellent sprays disrupt foraging trails and cause the colony to fragment — queens and workers split into multiple new colonies and relocate deeper into the structure. One ghost ant problem becomes three.
White-footed ants have developed resistance to many common pyrethroid insecticides used in consumer sprays. Surface treatment provides minimal knockdown and no colony impact — the colony continues expanding behind walls.
Any spray kills only the workers it contacts. The queen — who lays 1,000+ eggs per day — survives and replaces foraging workers within days. Colony elimination requires products the workers carry to the queen, not instant-kill contact sprays.

For yard ant species, we apply broadcast granular bait over the full lawn area and individually treat visible mounds. Granular bait is slower-acting than liquid drench but reaches the queen via worker foraging — providing complete colony elimination rather than just surface knockdown of visible mounds.
We schedule a 2–3 week follow-up to confirm foraging trails have stopped and colony activity has ceased.
